The quantitative survey results showed an overall high prevalence of multiple forms of malnutrition among adolescent

boys and girls aged 12–18: stunting (19 per cent of boys, 23 per cent of girls), thinness (10 per cent of boys and 4 per cent of girls), overweight (14 per cent of boys, 11 per cent of girls) and anaemia (5 per cent of boys, 18 per cent of girls). Notably, sub-optimal eating and physical activity habits emerged as major determinants of malnutrition in this target age group. For instance, an average of 83 per cent of adolescents surveyed habitually consumed sweet drinks, 65 per cent ate factory-made snacks, 38 per cent ate cakes and pastries, and 35 percent ate fried snacks, with only minor differentiation across boys and girls. Concurrently, only 2 per cent of the adolescents surveyed reported doing moderate physical activity, while less than 1 per cent reported taking part in vigorous activities.

The qualitative study showed that dietary intake and physical activity of adolescent boys and girls were influenced by contextual changes in their family lifestyles and environment. Due to the increased cash needs for both regular and periodic expenses, many family members sought formal or informal work opportunities. Adolescents also reported the need to have their own money for motorbike costs, mobile phone credit, purchasing snack food between meals, smoking, dating, and sports activities, which was also linked with an increased number of adolescents working for income.
