Vocational Employment Training on Handicrafts

We have undertaken a vocational employment potential training for affected victims of Bhopal gas Tragedy. The programmes specially organize for affected gas victims for generating their employment potentials. We trained total 20 beneficiaries belonging from affected area on zari zardozi crafts. The programme is supported by Commissioner Gas Rahat & Rehabilitation &M.P. Hastshilp Vikas Nigam.

Victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy have filed an appeal in a higher court here contesting a lower court's decision that Union Carbide Corporation cannot be sued for the ongoing contamination from the chemical plant...The appeal has been filed in the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit by the survivors and members of the surrounding community near the plant site in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh for toxic contamination, along with the property owners whose wells have been fouled by toxins from the plant...The manager who oversaw the construction of the plant confirmed that he worked for UCC, not for the Indian subsidiary that officially operated the plant, the plaintiffs said...Non-governmental organisation Earth Rights International said since judges are not supposed to weigh evidence without letting a jury hear the case, the plaintiffs believe that the Second Circuit will correct the error in judgement against UCC...Earth Rights had filed the lawsuit in the Southern District of New York on behalf of residents of Bhopal, saying land and water of the citizens are being contaminated by waste from the plant.

Methyl isocyanate, which was released from the Union Carbide plant in December 1984, is known to damage human DNA by interacting with proteins. Such damage was recorded in studies done by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in years following the gas leak.

Now a team of scientists from MGM New Bombay Hospital has performed fresh tests on people who were exposed to MIC and found that the damage continues. Researchers used the same categorisation that was used by ICMR-people were grouped as severely exposed, moderately exposed or unexposed. Blood samples of 156 persons were collected for this study. Of this, 130 samples gave readable data and anomalies detected were classified, and results compared with ICMR screening performed between 1985-1988.

The study has shown two trends. Even though people who were severely exposed to the gas now possess fewer abnormal cells, the frequency of aberrations within such cells has increased with time. Another finding was increase in chromosomal aberrations even in people who were not exposed or moderately exposed to the gas.

The researchers explain it could be due to several reasons. “A number of confounders, including lifestyle, environment, nutritional factors, drinking water, occupational exposures, and inherent genetic conditions interact. Additionally, continuous soil contamination by chemical wastes dumped in the Union Carbide India Ltd site might have augmented the genetic changes through interaction with other biologic and abiologic factors,” the study says.

It's been 30 years since Bhopal gas tragedy occurred on the night of 2 December 1984 at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) where cyanide gas accidently leaked into the air, killing thousands of residents in the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. Estimates vary on death toll and more than one lakh people are still suffering the aftermath of the mishap and children are still born with congenital diseases. The water is said to be contaminated affecting the health of people, tonnes of waste remain in the underground, where thousand were buried following the tragedy. Activists have been fighting to hold Union Carbide accountable, and to claim justice for the victims of the world’s worst industrial disaster. “While Union Carbide continues to have the utmost respect and sympathy for the victims, we find that many of the issues being discussed today have already been resolved and responsibilities assigned for those that remain," said Tomm F Sprick, Director of Union Carbide Information Center.
